In memory of
Madame Pooskavich
THE ONE AND ONLY
HOW I GOT MY NAME
My people, the Lathrops, used to have a cat whose name was The Varmint.
They adopted him as a stray, and thought the name suited him. However, the
more the humans spoiled The Varmint, the more he felt he deserved a more
regal name. He wasn't happy until they modified his name and began referring
to him as The Great Alexandrovich Varmintski - Pooska.
Personally, I think they should not have bestowed such a regal name on a
stray tabby cat, but it's because of that cat I got my name. The Lathrops
thought I bore some resemblance to The Varminski - Pooska (even though I
am not a cat) so they named me The Pooskavich. Later they discovered that
the suffix "vich" indicated a male...So they added the "MADAME"
to my name. Let me assure you that I was not an ordinary tabby cat. I was
a small person with no opposable thumbs who hated cats, and I just had
this beautiful bulls-eye pattern coat which made me look like a tabby.
MY FAVORITE THINGS
I loved to entertain people who come to visit. After all, I was certain that
I was the only one people come to see. Since my people enjoyed theatrical pursuits,
it was only fitting that I prove to one and all that I was the real entertainer
in the family. Generally, my stage was the middle of the living room floor,
and my props were the toys the Lathrops had given me over the years.
I also enjoyed trying to trick my people into feeding me more "good stuff"
(canned food) than I should have. Unfortunately they refused to use a silver
platter or something more fitting to my station in life. Still, I must admit,
I had them pretty well trained at last. They knew how bossy and demanding
I could get if they didn't give in to my every whim.
I also loved it when my people paid homage by rubbing my magnificent tummy,
telling me how cute I was. Of course, I knew I was most cute when I was upside
down.
THINGS I HATE
Cats. Travelling except on my own 4 feet. Drafts. Those slobbery, undignified
dogs. Computers, phones, anything that diverted the attention my people should
have been paying to me.
